Seasonal Biology: Avian Photoreception Goes Deep
نویسندگان
چکیده
The avian hypothalamus senses light directly, allowing endocrine physiology to synchronise to seasonal day-length changes. New data implicate the photopigment VA-opsin in this deep brain photoreception.

Vertebrate ancient opsin photopigment spectra and the avian photoperiodic response
In mammals, photoreception is restricted to cones, rods and a subset of retinal ganglion cells. By contrast, non-mammalian vertebrates possess many extraocular photoreceptors but in many cases the role of these photoreceptors and their underlying photopigments is unknown. In birds, deep brain photoreceptors have been shown to sense photic changes in daylength (photoperiod) and mediate seasonal ...

Biological impacts of light beyond vision, i.e., non-visual functions of light, signify the need to better understand light detection (or photoreception) systems in vertebrates. Photopigments, which comprise light-absorbing chromophores bound to a variety of G-protein coupled receptor opsins, are responsible for visual and non-visual photoreception. Non-visual opsin photopigments in the retina ...

All organisms have evolved photodetection systems to synchronize their physiology and behavior with the external light-dark (LD) cycles. In nonmammalian vertebrates, the retina, the pineal organ, and the deep brain can be photoreceptive. Inner retinal photoreceptors transmit photic information to the brain and regulate diverse nonvisual tasks. We previously reported that even after preventing e...
متن کاملSeasonal changes in the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis in birds.
Seasonal reproduction in birds is the adaptation to breed at the time of the greatest survival of young. This exact moment is mainly imposed by the photoperiod which stimulates the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis and starts breeding season. This article summarizes present knowledge concerning: 1/ perception and transduction of light into the biological signal; 2/ model of the avian photoperi...
متن کاملCircadian Photoreception: Spotlight on the Brain
In addition to its visual function, the mammalian eye detects light for a range of behavioral and physiological responses that are separate and apart from sight. Recent studies have begun to shed light on the areas of the brain that respond to such 'non-visual' photoreception in the human eye.
